Race report by Sally:
On Saturday evening Bev, Janet, Lynda and myself took part in the 4th Carrebirras Mil Palmeras 6k road race. The race started at 8pm to allow the temperature to drop from 92 to 89 degrees 🥵🌞
My plan was to take it steady, enjoy the scenery, take some pics, and don’t over exert myself in that heat….and then I was told that the top 3 age category winners were presented their prizes on a podium!…so that plan went out of the window…I was getting on that podium 🤩
Janet and I shuffled our way towards the front of the start line and then we were off, an uphill start heading in land and undulating towards the sea front, down to the promenade and back along to a wooden board walk heading up hill again. With the podium as my driver I set off far too fast and after 2k the heat and humidity really started to slow me down. The roads were closed and the police did a great job of keeping beach goers out of our path. There was 2 water stations and we also had hose pipes dowsing us down to help with the heat. 6k does not sound far but in those conditions it was extremely challenging. Eventually the finish line was in sight, I could not have done more than I had.
Janet was first to come in having a fantastic race and an age category win. I was next closely followed by Bev and then Lynda. Lynda did amazing to complete that event after only just returning to running following a long injury.
Once over the line we took full advantage of all the food, fresh fruit, nuts and crisps, pizza and free beer. From start to finish this was a fabulous event with music, spectators and summer vibes.
I was delighted to get 2nd in category and enjoy my time on that podium! I think that we all did Lostock proud, we even took the flag to Zumba on the beach! 🏖️🤣
