History
The Club was first formed in the early 1980’s, when a large number of British Aerospace employees at the Lostock factory got together to run the Bolton marathon, they trained as a group and decided to form a Club. In those early days they met on Wednesday nights in the sports pavilion on the large sports field at the factory and got together in the Sports Club bar for a beer and chat. There are still original members and some that joined in its second year active within the Club today. With the demise of BAe over the years the Club has moved its base several times; Lostock Leisure/Barnstormers, Bolton Arena/Bromilow Arms before arriving at its present base at Horwich Leisure Centre/Horwich Conservative Club.
The Club has always been proactive in its approach to the sport and organised many events in the past, these include the Lostock 6 miler (which is one of the oldest races in the area and still going from strength to strength), the Lostock 10K, C&A 20 mile race (this incorporated the Inter Counties 20 mile Championship and was a testament to the to the organisational prowess of the Club) and X-Country races as part of the SELCC League.
Today
Today the Club is still very active and holds various events over the year, e.g. Chairman’s Road, Trail and Fell Handicaps all of which are followed by a get together and supper, there is also Bike/Run/Bike handicap fondly known as “Leo’s Duathlon”. The Club is still part of the SELCC League and of course the Lostock 6 continues to be successful. Finally there is the Leo Pollard Memorial Fell race over the local hills and is becoming a favourite challenge for local fell runners.
The Club is ever expanding and there is a little something for everyone. We have recently expanded into supporting those who wish to take part in Triathlons, or maybe just want to improve their swimming or bike riding, with sessions for swims and bike rides. In addition to this, we have informal groups that meet outside of scheduled times for runs, swims and bike rides. We encourage beginners of any ability/age to train and improve. One thing for sure is that, regardless of ability, no one will be left behind!
The Club is not just about pounding the roads, fells and all out training, it is about developing a good social atmosphere. There is the annual camping weekend which is always a good family occasion and well attended. Your partner/kids/next door neighbour’s dog are all welcome to join in the fun. In addition, there are regular social events throughout the year where we can all get together for beer, banter and being with brilliant friends.
So if you are seeking to join a club that prides itself in its friendly and social approach with some training thrown in for good measure then look no further, come and try us out on Wednesday nights at 6.50pm for a 7pm start from the Horwich Leisure Centre foyer.
