Bala Legend 70.3 — Race Report

This weekend I finally lined up for the Bala Legend 70.3 in Snowdonia — a race that’s been on the training plan for months, and one that lived up to its reputation as one of the UK’s toughest 70.3 courses.

**Race morning** started with a real treat: catching the pro race set off before the Legend wave, which added a great buzz to the pre-race nerves and gave a good sense of the pace the day would demand.

**The swim** was, unsurprisingly, cold — cold enough that getting moving fast wasn’t optional, it was essential just to get the blood flowing. Once into rhythm it settled into the usual controlled effort, but that first minute or two was a proper shock to the system.

**The bike** was where the course really showed its teeth. The climbs were relentless in places and made for a genuinely challenging ride, but the reward was some of the most spectacular scenery Snowdonia has to offer — the kind of views that almost (almost) make you forget your legs are burning. Add in weather that turned unusually hot for a Welsh race day, and it made pacing and hydration more of a tactical battle than expected.

**The run** traced the edge of the lake for two laps — flat and scenic in contrast to the bike, though the heat by this point was doing its own damage. Watching the lake shimmer alongside you for 13.1 miles was a nice distraction from tired legs.

Overall: a brutal but beautiful day out. Hills, heat, and a cold swim aside, this is genuinely one I’d recommend to anyone chasing a proper test in stunning surroundings — and worth knowing they also run sprint and Olympic distance events on the same day if you want to bring less experienced friends or family along.

A huge well done to Josie Greenhalgh, who took on one of the toughest fell races around – the Grizedale Horseshoe. Greenhalgh was superb throughout, earning the title of the ‘Queen of descending’ after taking some fantastic lines off the mountain. Her efforts were rewarded with an excellent third place female finish and first Vet ... Grizedale Horseshoe

Joining Lostock AC has been one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I decided to give it a try mainly to loose weight and meet new people. It's really helped with my weight, mental health and output on life. I've been in the club over a year now. Everyone makes you feel so welcome and I love being part of the Lostock family. My running has definitely improved, especially seeing all the medals I've won. It is not just running, Lostock offers other activities too such as cycling, bootcamp and skiing. All I've had a go at which has just been brilliant. Lostock is my second family . I have entered the Machester marathon next year and an ultra. All this for someone who couldn't run . Everyone has made me feel very welcome in the club, I now consider myself to be a runner and would recommend anyone to give Lostock a try.

I joined Lostock AC to help improve my running and to motivate me to run more often. The club has surpassed my expectations. I am not from Bolton originally and did not have many friends in the area. I now feel part of an extended family. I have been encouraged and supported to run half marathons, marathons and an Ultra. I would never believe this was possible 3 years ago.
